Do I need endodontic treatment?
Most of the time you won’t be able to determine this all on your own. You may be referred to our Tampa endodontic specialist by your general dentist. Why were you referred to us? More than likely you are dealing with a dental pulp that is infected or inflamed. A dental pulp is a structure within the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. If you came in for an emergency dental appointment, it was probably because you were experiencing a pretty unpleasant toothache.
What can cause a dental pulp to become infected?
Despite the strength and durability of enamel, problems can still penetrate this barrier and reach the dental pulp. Deep-seated decay, cracks, chips, fractures and getting multiple dental procedures performed on a single tooth can all lead to a tooth that is weak and susceptible to further infection and damage. Dental trauma such as a sports-related tooth injuries can also lead to an inflamed dental pulp, which if not treated can cause a tooth abscess, or infection.
Along with pain you may also notice discolorations or darkening in the tooth. It’s also not uncommon to experience tooth sensitivity to hot and cold. You may find that dental pain gets worse when trying to chew. Of course, you also may not experience any symptoms, which is why routine cleanings and exams are a vitally important part of any oral care regimen.
What does an endodontist do?
When you come in for an infected or inflamed pulp, our duty is to remove the dental pulp. This procedure is known as a root canal and it is performed right here in our office in a single visit. Once the procedure is complete, you will need to come back in to have a dental crown placed over the tooth to protect it and strengthen it.
